Is it hot enough for you? Temperatures this week have been in the 90s here in Louisville, with humidity to match, and no breeze. If you are working in your yard during the day, be sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.
The Japanese Beetles are out in full force. They are chomping on roses and other flowers throughout the city. They are a fact of lie here in the Ohio Valley, and there is no insecticide or natural predator that will control them. Even the praying mantis will just spit them out if they catch one. The best thing you can do is pick them off by hand and drop them into a bucket of soapy water. You won't get them all, but every one you get will be one that won't reproduce for next year. These beetles drop to the ground when they are finished feeding and lay their eggs in the soil.
We have a new feature here on this website - Garden Blogs. Any registered member can write blog entries, and members and visitors may comment on the entries. You can click on the user name of any blogger and see all the entries written by that person. One member (me!) has already begun a blog. It is just my daily journal of my work, observations, and ideas for my garden. I hope other registered members will start posting their own blog entries.

Welcome to our website! We have had a lot of new visitors to the site in recent days. Please consider registering so you can post in our Forum and add pictures to our Gallery.
The 2009 Original Highlands Garden Tour was a great success! Thanks to all Club members who worked so hard to make it happen. It was a great weekend, and all the gardens were wonderful. Pictures of all the gardens are now available in our Gallery.
Plans for the July meeting are already in place. Please see this article for details. We love to have visitors. Any Metro Louisville resident is invited to attend and consider joining our club. Our meetings are always fun and interesting. We meet on the second Thursday of each month at various locations throughout the Original Highlands and surrounding areas.

The Original Highlands Garden Tour is today and tomorrow. It's not too late to get your ticket and attend! We hope to have a great turnout to see these 9 wonderful gardens. Sunday should be a great day for this tour. You can buy tickets at Starbuck's at Highland and Baxter. Our ticket table is set up outside. If you buy a ticket Saturday, it is good for both days.
Please plan to attend this great event, see the gardens, and get new ideas for small and shady spaces. Proceeds benefit the Highland Island and Patterson Park, two local landmarks in the Original Highlands.
The July meeting of the Fleur-de-Lis Garden Club is set for Thursday, July 9 at 7:00pm. It will be held at 1045 Barret Ave., with a program on "Rock Gardening and Hardscaping". More details will be posted soon.
